"Come on, just touch it. It doesn't hurt at all". His machismo seeped through the tenor of his voice almost as strongly as his cologne. The texture was bumpy and almost wet, like freshly scrapped hide of some prehistoric animal. "That's gross" she said, whisking her fingers across her corduroys. The use of touch was the least favorite of her sensations, and if she could have opted to smell the fresh tattoo instead of laying her bony fingertips on it, she would have in an instant. But then again most people relate to touch better than to smell, especially in situations like these, where flirtatious bumps, grazings, and light taps are purposely yet ever so accidentally embarked upon. Flashes of images from National Geographic's cluttered her mind as she drew the parallel between the the matting rituals of gazells and her present situation.
" Then what excites you, huh? If blood and life altering decisions gross you out so much, what really gets you going?" he spouted accusingly.
"Maybe rain" she replied. The words came before the thought was even created, and the response out of his lips came just as fast.
"Oh, like the metaphyscial nature of the water and how it washes away everything, giving the world a fresh start. Or how it brings life and renewal and..."
"No". She side stepped the box he had created for her completely and decided then and there that this could go no where. Bending her face down close to the dirty table, she inhaled the vapors rising from the freshly delivered coffee, swallowing the smell, and then excusing herself.
He sat still, not in protest but in silent agreement that these two minds would never meet, as they existed in different universes entirely. All they had in common was the molecules that each had agreed to share which they pumped through their noses and out their mouths as a means of survival. Other than air, there was nothing to share.
I needed some fiction. Real life is just so darn sticky.
I now realize that I desperately missed the seasons. Thank the world and the universe for fall and it's freshness.
