Paint me a picture of man
What makes up a man? Is it skin, bones, and gew or is it heart, soul and mind? I'd like to believe in a combination of the two, but even this leads me to a lack of logic. I am brought to this thought that man is neither matter nor idea but rather man or woman, is made up of time. It is only his or her past that defines him today. If no time were to pass, no man would exist. Truely exist, and be something beyond a lump of matter.
Take a man whom you know exists. He acts a certain way, thinks a certain way and looks a certain way. All three actions can not be described in terms of matter, all three cannot be described in terms of ideas, but all three can be known in terms of time. "I act this way because my mama beat me during childhood"..."I think this way because I read alot of science fiction in my spare time"...."I look this way because I used to live in Florida"....So if time is what a man is made up of, then why can't we change people just as easily as they change over time? Why can't we control men like we control the fads of the ages? It is always said "Don't try to change someone" but we all do it anyways. We hope that our ideas will somehow influence the ignorant. We pray our religion with seep through our actions and change the lost. We even dress a certain way in order to change how others veiw us. When we will learn...
I'd like to think that time isn't made of permanent ink. That upon branding us with scars and wounds, or blissful memories and soft spots, that we can write over those brandings at any time. Say if we don't want to be afraid of commitment we could rewrite a time of infidelity by persuing a successful marriage. But, unfortunately, time works much more like a pen than a pencil; not so easily erased.
So now I ask you; is it possible to change a man?To change what time has written in permanent ink on the minds and bones of those we love? Or are we fighting a loosing battle? More importantly, can we ever hope to live beyond our past? I know forgiveness, I understand movement, but I can just not answer straightly to time.....

Comments:
I wouldnt comment except that I think that this is an absoulty brillant post.

I would like to say that a little quip popped into my head "even a stoped clock is right twice a day" This would imply to me that no, you cant change the past, but there are second chances, times when you can break form the mold that is your life, and try to make your self, and others, better. This is the curse/gift of time, that it is always flowing.

people are born and live, and for some of us thats it. but i must say that sometimes the person you see on the outside may not be the same 'man' on the inside. I beleive people are somewhat like a coin, two sides, each simialr but not the same. Some of us see the face of the coin, notice that it is tarnished and throw it out, never taking the time to see whats underneath the face. Another idea is that time does change us into the people we become, thats the tarnish. But the back is what we want to change into. It is the side that knows the path they are going down and dont like it, the side that wants change. It isnt true that people cant change, but it takes them to do it. They have to be willing to flip themselves over and let the silver shine through.

i guess what i meant was that you are super right, and no matter what histoy affects everything, but maybe not how we think it does.

Meh, I disagree. I would contend that it is infact human thoughts, and physicallities that create time. As I understand it time is nothing more than a series of related events strung together through a series of parrallel universes like an eternal slide show. We judge time's passing through the use of the two previously stated methods. For the sake of disagreeing, I think you've put the cart before the horse.

that is assuming your idea of time is correct Chris.

Kara, I want to thank you for the the thought and heart you put into this and every post. Your words are like a salve to my battered mind, and I truly truly appreciate you opening up your soul to us in this way.

Interesting points....too Chris I would say that time was being used in very broad terms. Mostly meaning the experiences that occur due to time passing. If there were no man, there would be no time, but without time, man would have no experiences. Any clearer? I miss you Elizabeth. Feel free to comment any time!
